Conversion of the workshops at Royal Earlswood Park created luxury apartments with south-facing views. The workshop building was one of three Grade II Listed Victorian buildings that once comprised the Royal Earlswood Hospital, a redundant NHS asylum.
Several poor quality extensions were demolished and extensive renovation of the exterior was required to restore the building to its original appearance. Masonry details and matching materials were used to recreate the architecture of the original design.
Conversion of the workshop interior required the existing structure to be retained wherever possible. A mix of one and two bedroom apartments were designed, each with views across the North Downs.
Derek Eaglen was principal architect for this project at ML Design, responsible for the design and the complex negotiations necessary to obtain planning and listed building approvals from the local authority.
