Conversion of the three historic Grade II Listed Victorian buildings that once formed the Royal Earlswood Hospital created 120 luxury apartments. This regeneration project required extensive renovation and reconstruction of the main asylum building, the adjoining historic workshops and the smaller infirmary.
Demolition of the poor quality additions and alterations to the main building was followed by extensive reconstruction of new sections, each designed to match the original Victorian architecture. Materials and details were chosen to closely match with the existing structure.
The conversion of the main building resulted in 80 apartments, mainly two-bedroom, with several smaller one-bedroom and some larger three-bedroom units. The Great Hall, once a venue for patient's entertainment, now provides a swimming pool and fitness centre for the residents of the new apartments. The design also included restoration of the landscaped grounds.
Derek Eaglen was principal architect for this project at ML Design, responsible for the design and the detailed negotiations needed to obtain planning permission and listed building approval from the local authority.
