More than 300 apartments, town houses and cottages were created at Southdowns Park by conversion of the St Francis' Hospital. This regeneration project received a Sussex Heritage Trust Award and acclaim from the Council for Protection of Rural England and also from SAVE Britain's Heritage. The development is set in landscaped grounds that were restored to reflect the original Victorian design.
Conversion of the Grade II Listed Victorian buildings required demolition of many poor quality extensions to the main asylum and its adjoining buildings. Much of the eastern wing was replaced with new construction designed to match the existing Victorian architecture.
The extensive renovation used materials that closely matched the original polychromatic brickwork and details which complemented the building's unique Italianate architectural style.
Derek Eaglen was principal architect for the project with Cowan Architects. The later phases were carried out by Derek Eaglen Architects. The work included extensive negotiations with the local authority in order to obtain planning permission and listed building approval.
