This community centre design uses a new entrance and reception space to unite and manage several previously under-used buildings.
The site had been unmanaged and neglected and was suffering from vandalism and abuse after years of little or no supervision and lack of maintenance. It included two separate childrens' nurseries, a modern church, a youth club and a working men's club.
The new community centre design connects each of the separate buildings via a new entrance leading into a central foyer and cafe area. A full-time manager operates the community centre from a new centrally located reception desk and office.
The sometimes problematic men's club has been replaced by the cafe, allowing everyone in the community to drop-in, meet and make use of the many new activities held at the centre during the day and evening.
The centre has proven to be highly successful, providing social and leisure spaces where all sectors of the community come together for a wide range of activities such as youth clubs, creches, nursery schools, wedding ceremonies, religious services, evening education and exercise classes.
