This day nursery design made good use of the Grade II Listed and redundant St Francis' Chapel on the Southdowns Park development. The regeneration of the chapel now provides a centre for early learning care for the children living on the new housing development at Southdowns Park and from the adjoining residential area.
The chapel interior was renovated and a new upper table-style floor constructed centrally between the columns and above the nave, extending into the chancel. The side aisles remain open, allowing daylight to penetrate into the darker areas of the building.
Several different design options were explored with the developer and the local authority's planning and listed building officers for regenerating the chapel, including residential conversions and use as a business centre or museum.
