Primary School Design

Wingham Primary
Kent

This primary school is of traditional appearance and uses natural materials chosen to harmonise with local buildings and the site's rural environment. The school has six south-facing classrooms, each with north-facing clerestory glazing.

The classrooms are organised by an internal street running east-west. This street also serves to separate the teaching areas from the wet areas. Skylights running the length of the street maximise natural daylighting. A music room is located at one end of the street and the school's library at the opposite end.

A second internal street runs north-south, connecting the main entrance with the school's large hall and staff rooms.

The two streets intersect beneath the south tower, where large glazed doors lead out onto the school's private outdoor play areas. The tower also serves to mark the division between the spaces used by the reception classes and the older children.

The staff rooms also overlook two small courtyards that provide outdoor teaching spaces and a play area for the youngest children.
