Youth Centre Design

Crawley Boys Club

This youth centre and a similar sea cadet school were two buildings commissioned by Crawley Borough Council for a restricted town centre site.

The design has blue laminate-clad cube divided in half internally by a long masonry spine wall to provide a large activity space with glazed roof panels for each of the centres. On diagonally opposite sides of the spine wall are two similar buildings built from fair-faced blockwork and curved metal roofing, to provide the various other rooms, storage and recreation spaces.

The Youth Club, Crawley Boys Club, has a central sports hall connected to club rooms and catering facilities. Other spaces on two floors were designed for gymnastics, boxing and fitness equipment. Additional sports areas are located externally.

The Sea Cadet School, TS Cossack, includes several teaching and club rooms on two floors adjoining the multi-purpose hall. The hall is used for parades, sports activities, education and many recreational activities. To prevent disturbance to the neighbouring houses, the hall was acoustically designed to contain the very high sound levels when being used as a rehearsal space for the cadet marching bands.
